Artist Statement
My work explores moments from daily life that are often overlooked, mundane, and messy. I hope to capture fleeting scenes that are constantly overturned as we go about our routines and to provide a new visual perspective to the familiar. I love thick, gestural and expressive brushwork and playing with color to allow moments and textures to work themselves out intuitively on the surface.
Most of my imagery reflects on the intergenerational relationships in my life, drawing on my childhood and parenthood as a second generation Taiwanese American. I’m interested in how abstraction and the associations of color and form can hint at cultural familiarity and memory, hopefully connecting without necessarily saying. For me personally, it expresses a growing appreciation for an aesthetic that, when I was young, felt uncurated and nonsensical but now reveals a resilience and creativity that deserves celebration.
